The short answer: it depends on the plan you have. Marketplace plans and most individual health plans are tied to a state, and a move is a qualifying event to pick a new one. Many private plans are nationwide PPOs that travel with you when you move. Tell us before you move, and we line up the new coverage so there is no gap.

First, find out which kind of plan you have

  • A Marketplace (ACA) plan. It is tied to the state Marketplace you enrolled through. Moving to a new ZIP or state is a qualifying life event, which opens a Special Enrollment Period to pick a plan in your new state.
  • Most other individual health plans. These are usually state-specific too, so check yours before you go rather than after you arrive.
  • A private nationwide PPO. Many private plans are nationwide PPOs: you can see doctors across state lines, with no referrals, and the plan goes with you when you move or work in another state.

Not sure which one you have? Tell us the plan name and we will check it with you.

The clock a move starts

If you are going to the Marketplace in your new state, you generally have about 60 days from the move to enroll, so tell us the date it happens. If a private plan fits better, there is no window to wait for: private plans enroll any month, and for most private plans on our site, applications submitted by the 23rd of the month start on the 1st of the next month. Private plans ask health questions, and approval is the carrier's decision.

Picture it

You start the new job across the country on the 1st. Your old plan is still on autopay, so you assume you are covered. A few weeks in, you need an urgent care visit and learn the plan only works back home. By the time you look into a new plan, half the enrollment window is gone.

Now picture the other version. A month before the move, you send us your new ZIP, your doctors and your medications. We check whether your current plan travels, price private plans for your new ZIP next to the Marketplace there, and confirm the start date in writing. The new plan is in force the day you need it, and the old one is cancelled effective the same date.

Why a move is a good time to compare

Every carrier prices by age, and your ZIP can move the final rate, so the price in your new state may look nothing like the one you pay now. If you are generally healthy and get little or no subsidy, a private plan can be the more affordable choice, and a nationwide PPO means the next move does not start the process over. If your income qualifies for a large subsidy, the Marketplace in your new state may win. Have a health condition? Tell us first: depending on the condition, a private plan may still be an option.

Moving late in the year? A calendar-year deductible resets every January 1 no matter when you enrolled. When does my deductible reset?

Keep the old plan until the new one is in force

Do not cancel anything until the new plan is approved and you have its start date. We confirm the exact effective date before you sign, and never backdate. How to switch without a gap.

The rest of your policies

Health is not the only policy a move touches. Home and auto policies re-rate for the new state, so they need a look too. Life insurance travels with you anywhere. See home and auto or life insurance.
